Day 46 - Sunday, 28 February - Cervantes ("Pinnacles Campsite")

The township of Cervantes, where we will stay tonight, is not related to Don Quichote, but was named after a vessel, that shipwrecked on this dangereous coast.

The biggest perils were maybe those that lay in wait for the Dutch East India Company en route to the spice islands of Indonesia.

These ships had no reliable way of knowing their longitude (how far they had travelled east).  It made it difficult for them to know when to stop sailing east from Africa and head north to Batavia.

Turn too soon and you increase your journey.  Leave it too long and you will run into the cliffs of the west coast of Hollandia Nova (where we are for the moment).

"Beach Walk" at Greenhead.

Signs like these ensures Hans, that Australia is NOT a place for him.  "Keep out", "Go away", etc.
